I think my $35 dollar pair of earphones're the bestest shiz I've bought in a pretty long time. Certainly beats out the countless servings of fried mars bars and other junk food, haha. They provide a certain impetus to diversify my repertoire of music, and I do feel that much more awake/enriched at night when checking up the occasional lyric.

It's probably psychological, but having your earphones play right into your cosy ear canal far beats having speakers playing music you have to distill from other noise. I've bought some measure of ability to decide what I want to listen to. In a world where you can't help shiz what people say of you, that's worth another world.

I used to think earphones were anti-social, which they are. Which isn't bad I suppose. Removes you from obligatory conversation, and having to search around for someone to engage. There used to be a certain social dependency (not that it doesn't exist now) that I had, having to look outwards for acceptance. That phase of my growth is coming to a close. Doubt my earphones caused it in any direct way, just that the purchase carries an extent of symbolic significance.

To a small extent they help with focusing as well, though not really. Slow down or speed up the pace of things, depending on mood.

And there's of course the quintessential dual function - earplugs for sleep even deeper than it is now.

I regretted splurging in the immediate minutes following purchase - but now there's a delayed post-retail therapeutic effect. Probably less from the act of spending than the value of the product, haha.
