I realize it doesn't make sense, in a time when you tend to lose more than gain, to ascribe especial meaning to each and every thing that comes you by.

When you take things seriously, their importance is amplified.
You can't regard life in isolation; if you take it seriously you take everything seriously.
When you lose more than you gain, amplifying the net loss is stupid.
I could afford to take life a lot less seriously. In fact, it might be a good thing (:
