Why am I always in a dilemma? Stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea, the rock and a hard place, between Scylla and Charybdis? Why on earth? What have I done to deserve this? This is a horribly heartwrenching style of dilemma. I'm not sure really.
Good news is, I didn't flunk my ANGLES after all. In fact, according to Mr Quek, I got quite a decent grade. Gregory did exceedingly well, especially when he didn't address the topic by the idiomatic way. Maybe he got marked down for religiousness. A pious Christian, he constantly referred to the Trinity. Something about the Holy Spirit being ablaze. The judges didn't seem too happy I guess. Anyway I gotta represent my consortium. Hope I don't freak out or anything.
Today we went to the ACM. Asian Civilizations Museum. The 75 iSparkies. Minus Zicong. Theory exam. Minus Gregory. He's been constantly plagued by sicknesses. The museum tour was pretty spooky the whole place was dark and our tour guide seemed to disappear all the time. Anyway the artefacts were pretty interesting I must say. But I shall not elaborate on them here as I can confirm that most of you people will not find my description remotely interesting. Our tour guide asked us what school we were from. Some said RI, some said ACS, I said Greenview Secondary. So the lie was out. Curses *swears under breath* By the way, that was inconsequential, as the tour guide was an old Hwa Chong student. See we are so well connected. Whee! After we were officially dismissed with a pile of ACEs to do, me and OSS went back into the building to browse around. For the tour was far too short to actually compile anything. But we still didn't compile anything. Talking crap all throughout. Bleargh. Then Macdonalds, for the first time in a little over a month. Yeah then we headed home.
I shall speak of my dilemma now. Mr Quek offered me a place in debate, he had been insinuating something yesterday, Jia Han's blog comprehensively covers that all. His blog is rather funny and all... I shall cover the conversation here.
For convenience, I'll be A, Mr Quek'll be B and OSS will be C.
Scene 1. While idling around the exhibits...
B: Hello Li Ki
A+C: Hello Mr Quek
B: Are the exhibits nice? Have you been jotting down anything?
A: Erm yes. And no. Uhh.. but we know what we want to do the ACE on.
B: Oh... good. By the way would you be interested to join debate?
A: As a second EP3?
B: Nono, as a first Ep3. Debate and English drama are merging.
A: Uh huh? That means I got to quit NCC?
B: Yeah I guess.
A: Erm no thanks.
B: (Thinking...) Well I'll tell you about the benefits of debate. (he didn't say this, but its added in to smoothen the convo.)
A: Uh huh.
From here the points briefly are...
He says NCC is a uniformed group. A large uniformed group. Thus none of us are indispensable. We have to wait until Sec 2 to perform anything or win anything. Even then we have to share it out. In debate he says its different. Out of the 4 1 lost is an awesome loss. We could start debating from as early as Sec 1. We don't have to share the glory out that much. In debate your name is likely to ring more than in NCC. In debate it is easy to attain posts of Vice-President/President. 50%, in fact, compared to NCC. In debate you fight a real war, in NCC wars are fake. You get to represent the school a lot in debate. It has lots of benefits to your English language. This is a rare opporunity. Ep3 points come fast and easy like an avalanche. Name will ring in history, blah blah.
From here I shall narrate the conversation again
B: So what other Ep3 can offer this to you?
A: Chinese debate.
B: Well the Chinese scholars are there in relativity to them you pale.
A: (Cringes.) Well there's something NCC can offer that debate can't. Comeraderie
B: But in debate you forge much stronger relationships in a smaller group.
A: Well we suffer as a group in NCC.
B: If you want to suffer in debate that can easily be arranged.
A: (Cringes.) Well... no thanks...
B: Then?
A: Well... our school debate isn't exactly very good...
B: Thats because its a second EP3! When it becomes a first EP3...
A: Then?
B: More funding+training=HCI pawnage.
A: Uh huh.
B: Traditional rivals will stand no chance against us. Now we are weak, but with the next batch it will all change. We will pawn them.
A: Ermz...
D(Joseph): Hey Mr Quek do you think I could be in English debate? I wanna quit Judo!
B: What you think? Only ANGLES people...
D: (Walks away disappointed) Li Ki you better join.
B: See?
A: (helpless) But what will my platoonmates think of me?
B: You don't need to tell them. Simple teacher shifting and some politics will settle it.
A: My staff? Jiahan? Bill? Weicher who I persuaded to join NCC?
B: (speechless)
A: Well...
B: Move move to gathering place.
A+C: K...
A: (tries to avoid eye contact, struggles with self.)
B: (parting shot in the arm) You'd better consider.
I might have missed something out. But its around this. I love NCC a lot, but at the same time I wonder if the grass is greener on the other end. It would do wonders for my resume and seemingly there are lots of benefits. The reason why I chose the hell path in the first place was to become the student council president leading to the President's Scholarship. Rather unachievable/unattainable, but thats me dream. The hell path goes like this.
Recruit-Cadet-??-??-Master Sergeant
While doing the Council Path.
CIT-Councillor-Exco-iSpark president
Also rather impossible.
But I am one to risk it all. However, debate isn't that firm and solid a ground as of yet either. Especially when Gregory isn't in it. He's indispensable to track and field. God. Would someone give me divine enlightenment?
Well I shall comment on my IRS project 2006, especially when I am not in the mood for any homework. My topic was originally Cryonics, a very mistaken and controversial subject. Not too interesting, so Mr Quek+Some others told us to brainstorm a new one. When Muk and Weicher were talking about our indecision and early deaths I came up with the topic of euthanasia. Ya know, a sort of mercy killing. ONLY the person has to agree. Its only legalised in Belgium. Well we have to contact the following.
Belgium Ambassador
Jeremy Lim
KKH Staff
Dover Park Hospice
Lots of others.
After research we still have to do a novella. Sigh should have entered under qualitative, really. Sob. But language arts there are no real competitors I know I hope we do really well so we can slack off for ACE. Goody!
