Well the elite schools in Singapore are generally these few...
1. HCI
2. RI
3. ACS(I)
4. NYGHS
5. RGS
6. SCGS
7. NUSHS (maybe...)
I hear of a campaign somewhere that attempts to exclude HCI from this list due to some warped reasoning. That particular campaign proclaims that all HCI suck, that they are snobs, stuckup, and hated by all the other schools. Have they ever wondered why we are hated so much? In all interschool debates in my former graduating class, its always the rest of the world against the lone HCI person. Yes, have you ever wondered why?
I have. And the only reason I can think of is that HCI is hated because it is champs in most mental olympiads and other disciplines. Other schools like RI boast of the slightest achievement, like beating HCI's tennis (formerly a Group C EP3). Yet we are not like that. Only the notable achievements are showcased, for they are far too numerous in number. If I havn't got around boasting about the Physics Olympiad, here it goes. HwaChong got overall team champion, best performer, 4 out of 6 golds, 6 out of 9 golds, 1 bronze and 1 honourable mention. Yes, the statistics clearly show that we pawned. Yet you don't see any of us displaying this remarkable achievement on our MSN names. Honestly weird, but it shows we are not proud. Nor stuckup. And disproves the argument.
Spirit and discipline are part and parcel of HCI. Maybe there are a few exceptions, but it is generally true. People make the strongest and nastiest comments about HCI. Quite unfair, but we don't mind that as they are mostly untrue and fallacious. Of the 7 schools stated above, only one can be considered HCI's true competitor (quoted from Mr Quek, on numerous occasions, the last being Tuesday). That is NUSHS.
Although it has had a weak showing in the Physics Olympiad, or in recent Maths competitions for that matter, it has tremendous potential because it SPECIALIZES in these two areas. The Physics Olympiad was for the JC cohort, so I don't think they got to participate. Yupz, another reason is because Mr Quek is never wrong (give me 5 cp for sucking up to you please!! LOL!) Also the tremendous amount of talent there... uphill task beating them. But undoubtedly we will. In true Hwachong spirit.
